3 Things I Learned from Being on Submission

Hello reader! It’s me, Melody, just checking in to let you know where I am on my writing journey.

I’ve been on submission since February and it’s been an interesting ride. Overall, I’m enjoying the process even though nothing major has happened yet. It’s a whirlwind of emotions with hope at every turn.

While I’m in the midst of this journey, I thought I would share 3 things I’ve learned.

  1. Getting rejections hurts a lot less when you’re agented

Unless you’re a shining beacon of luck, you’re going to get rejections while on submission. I know crazy! You just went through all this rejection to get an agent and now you’re in the pits of despair again. Except for this time, you’re not actually in the pits of despair, more like the pits of, “Aw man.” Because if you have a good agent, an agent that believes in you, you don’t feel like you should give up. You are looking forward to the next editor and the next part of the submission journey.

2. Your book is not your baby

You might be thinking, “That is most certainly not true!” But believe me, this is a good thing. Your book can die on submission, and although I’m not to this point and hope I will never be, it doesn’t rip my heart out to think about this anymore.

My writing abilities are my baby. If I didn’t nail the market on the head with this book, I’ve got a whole sleuth of ideas ready to write about.

Separate yourself from your work. You’re more valuable than your product.

3. There’s hope around every corner

It might sound cheesy but it’s true! You never know where your writing journey will take you. One day you’re sad over a rejection and the next you’re getting a message from a Dr. Phil producer. This is totally hypothetical of course….

The point is, you never know who could read your writing or hear your words and be inspired by you. Keep sharing and never give up.
